Sour Stomach: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, Herbal Remedies and Prevention

Sour stomach is also called dyspepsia. It is also termed as upset stomach and is intended to describe pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. It is a group of symptoms used to describe upper gastrointestinal disturbances. It is not a disease and is not a constant condition. It is usually linked with indigestion and usually, is not a condition to be worried about.

The following symptoms add up to cause dyspepsia:

  • Burping or belching
  • Bloating of the stomach (feeling full)
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Regurgitation (vomiting inside mouth)

Causes of Sour Stomach

The causes of sour stomach can be a combination of symptoms. It is usually caused by upper gastrointestinal disturbances. Some of the causes are:

  • Eating too in very rare cases, indigestion may add up to be a symptom of stomach cancer. Mild indigestion is not much to worry about. But if the pain continues for more than 2 weeks, you have to see a doctor. Furthermore, if the pain is too severe, and the following symptoms are seen, you should immediately consult a doctor:
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting
  • Black stool
  • Short breaths
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Much and eating too quickly
  • Consuming carbonated beverages, alcohol and beverages containing caffeine (coffee, cola, tea)
  • Lying face down after meals
  • Going through strenuous physical activity soon after eating
  • Swallowing of air (aerophagia)
  • Consuming a lot of spicy foods

Treatment of Sour stomach

Typically, sour stomach is treated using natural, home remedies. Here is a list of items you can find in your kitchen/ around your house to treat your upset stomach:

1. Carrot Juice

Carrots can help your stomach feel better. They are even referred to as power food.
Blend carrots, a banana and a little water in a blender. Drink this juice. It is effective as it helps the stomach to absorb all the acids and gas that are causing your stomach discomfort.

2. Milk

Warm milk can fight off constipation. You can even mix a spoon of honey it it too keep the lining of your stomach smooth.

3. Carom Seeds

Roast a teaspoon of carom seeds in a pan and allow them to cool. After they cool off, crush them and add a pinch of salt to the crushed seeds. Consume it along with some warm water. It is known to be a very effective and fast working remedy for your stomach ache and also for when you have gas.

4. Lemon

Lemon is useful for just about anything. It helps you deal with indigestion and stomach ache. Mixing lemon juice and honey in warm water and drinking it will be really effective.

5. Yogurt

Yogurt is very effective to rid yourself of diarrhea and indigestion. It’ll work wonders if you mix some crushed cumin seeds and salt in the yogurt and have it, twice a day.

6. Soda Water

A glass of soda, juice of half a lemon and some black salt is also a boon for those of you with stomach discomfort.

7. Asafoetida

A pinch of asafoetida in the food that you cook or a little bit of it added to warm milk is also a way to treat your stomach ache.

8. Baking Soda

Add a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and drink it. It is also one of the effective ways to reduce acidity and sour stomach

9. Cinnamon and Ginger Tea

In a glass of warm water, add two cinnamon sticks and some ginger and let it rest for about five minutes. After that, drink the tea. It is an effective way to treat your stomach.

10. Hot water bag

Use a hot water bag wrapped in a cloth and place in on your stomach. It will help you relieve the pain. It is usually more effective for stomach ache caused by menstrual cramps.

11. Aniseed

Take a cup of water and add a teaspoon of aniseed in it. Lrt it stay overnight and drink the water the next day in an empty stomach.

12. Charred Toast

Burnt toasts are said to offset toxins and thus, relieve food poisoning.

13. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Drink a glass of water with a teaspoon of ACV before you have your meal.

14. Pawpaw

You can eat pawpaw daily to avoid the stomach ache.

15. Mixture of Dry Spices

Add teaspoon each of coriander seeds, fennel seeds, cumin seeds to some boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool to drink after meals.

16. Green Tea

To reduce the level of acidity in your stomach, have a cup of green tea every morning. Try to use honey as an alternative to sugar in your green tea

17. Water

Sour stomach or not, water is the best way to rid your body of toxins. You should drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

18. Rice Water

While cooking rice, use twice the water that you would normally use. Drain the excess water in a bowl and add a little honey to the rice water and drink it. A soothing layer is formed around the stomach because of the rice water and it helps you get relief from the pain.

19. Ice

It is a temporary treatment but it will work for getting momentary relief. Lie flat on your back and place some ice cubes on your belly button. This will reduce the impact of the pain.

20. Papaya

Papaya is a divine fruit if you suffer from sour stomach. Consuming it daily will surely keep your stomach issues at bay.



Herbal Remedies for Sour Stomach

1. Mint Leaves

Mint not only makes your mouth feel fresh but also helps you get rid of stomach disturbances. You can also mix a teaspoon of mint juice, ginger juice and lime juice, add a pinch of rock salt and have it.

2. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera does wonders to your skin. It also is very much effective for stomach issues. Consuming fresh aloe paste every morning keeps your stomach healthy.

Prevention of Sour stomach

There are certain ways to prevent you from getting a sour/upset stomach

  • Cut off the fatty food from your diet
  • Maintain a predictable diet. Changing your eating schedule can change the entire digestive system.
  • Eat slowly, chew well and make sure you do not over eat.
  • Avoid food items that upset your stomach. Pepper, beans, spices and selective veggies and fruits that seem bad for your stomach.
  • Avoid coffee or anything caffeinated in the afternoon. A morning coffee won’t do any harm. However, coffee in the afternoon, can mess up your stomach.
  • Avoid carbonated drinks as far as possible
  • Too hot or too cold beverages are not good for your stomach. The extreme temperatures cannot be digested properly
  • Quit alcohol and cigarettes or at least try to limit the intake. It is best to completely quit not only for your stomach issues, but more multiple other reasons
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Keep your body active. Exercise regularly.
  • Reduce stress as stress makes you sick of anything and everything you eat. So it’s best if you maintain your cool composure.
